In the early s, Flores emigrated from the Philippines to the United States, where he pursued an education and his entrepreneurial ambitions. He is a second-generation Filipino-American, and became interested in the story after learning Flores was also Filipino. Roberto admired the way Flores valued education and became a successful entrepreneur during a time when many immigrants worked as agricultural laborers.

Eligibility The contest is open to writers of color who are residents of the United States and who have not previously had a children's picture book published. Writers who have published other work in venues such as children's magazines, young adult, or adult fiction or nonfiction, are eligible. Only unagented submissions will be accepted. Work that has been published in any format is not eligible for this award.
