We asked a small number of our readers to review the first in the Gods and Warriors series, The Outsiders Home Gods and Warriors? I wanted to read it for its setting - Bronze Age, pre-Greek Gods - and was mostly pleased with the exploration of the different ways of life around the Greek Islands at that time including ways that people worshiped and lived. He befriends Renn who is somewhat like Pirra but she is a tough hunter-gatherer girl who knows what to do to survive.

T he setting is Greece, around 4, years ago. Hylas, a young goatherd, is attacked by Black Warriors. They have killed his dog, Scram who was his best friend and his younger sister is now missing. He finds his friend Telamon, the son of the Chieftain, who helps him get away, escaping on a raft along the coast. Soon after he meets Pirra, daughter of the high Priestess who is being forced to marry Telamon. Hyla steals a boat which later is destroyed in a storm and is washed up on the island of the Fin people. It turns out that Pirra has escaped to the same island.

Michelle Paver Author Biography. Renn, but P. Although I breezed through the book and in spite of its action-packed storyline… it was boring and unremarkable vook in the end. The story opens at the thick of action as Hylas is running for his life from the warriors trying to kill him.

This book also does not have the same suspense that Wolf Brother does as it seems to be written more like a short story with less developed characters and not much description. Thea: 5 - Meh indeed! Gods and Warriors read very samey to me.

And a love for the past and the natural world fills every page. Although I breezed through the book and in spite of its action-packed storyline… it was boring and unremarkable read in the end. Telamon is grieving for Hylas, and trying to gain the respect of blok father and uncles, Pirra really is a terrible character. Thirst was making her irritable! I have to admit that from a historical perspective, with its early Gods and belie. Well.
